of newtown, connecticut, 60 miles outside of new york city right now working through it together. ali? >> reporter: one of the things that's going to happen, we are going to hear the names. there's a lot of effort to find out who the victims were. police are saying very clearly, this was a real difficult task to identify. they had tentative identifications on everybody by last night. they wanted positive identifications and were not going to let their kids, they were not going to let the parents into the school to see their kids in that situation. so we are waiting for that momentarily. the parents know who their kids are, obviously, the children didn't come home last night. the bodies are still in the building, and that's an active crime scene, but there's also another active crime scene in this city, john. >> reporter: the one name police already released is adam lanza. he carried out the attack on the elementary school. when they arrived at his home, they made a startling discovery. mary snow is at lanza's home. mary, what did police find there? >> reporter: john, police found the

, the street was abuzz with activity. hoboken city police, jersey city police, bomb squad representatives and the fbi. the reason was they were going into the apartment of ryan lanza who is the brother of the shooter, the suspected shooter adam lanza. apparently adam had his brother's i.d. on him when he went into the school and conducted the shooting. so authorities went right to ryan's apartment in hoboken, took him into custody briefly for questioning also questioned some friends who may have lived with him there. it was just a confusing situation. they removed some materials from that apartment trying to piece together exactly what happened. as the night wore on, the police presence became less and less, i think as they gathered more information and realized that may not have been the center of their interests, shall we say going forward. i'm standing in front of ali, also i should mention the st. rose church of lima where last night there was that candle light vigil. you walk inside the church here and there are two poster boards where people have already posted dozens and dozens of

'll have a moment of silence in newtown in cities across america and around the world. the beautiful church bells will toll for all of the victims of the horrific shooting here. the governor here has asked for this to be a day of mourning, we can't understand what these families are going through, but we want to stand near them. president obama will also observe the moment of silence, and governors from at least 28 states have asked all of their residents to do the same. john, we'll bring that moment live on cnn, but the president has shifted to focus additionally on gun control in this country. that debate raging in the wake of this tragedy. the white house releasing a video from the president, just this morning. the president acknowledging that he is a supporter of the second amendment, the right to bear arms, saying that most gun owners are indeed responsible. but also making very clear where he draws the line. >> here is what i think we should do. this week, i called on congress to take up and pass common sense legislation, that has the support of the majority of the american people, in

that's really part of the problem because the big cities aren't seeing snow accumulation. they're seeing heavy rain with the wind. here's a snapshot. tral park gusting to 31 miles per hour. cleveland to indy, 20 to 30 mile per hour gusts and new york, the potential 50, 55 mile per hour gusts. so, he's the big picture. the good news though, we've seen things clear out. in illinois, indiana, even into ohio. you see those kind of holes in the radar, the dark white showing where the heaviest snow is. but see those dry pockets now? all that is lifting out. still wet here along the 95 cory r dor, but all the snow, we saw a lot. so in southeastern illinois, 18 inches. bloomfield, indiana, 11. indy, 7.2. paducah, kentucky, 4.6. a lot of strong storms and a lot of snow. but here's where the heaviest snow is. in upstate and western new york. that's really where the problems will be. here's a look at snowfall totals. some a little less than originally expected in western new york. it's kind of drying out a little dry air intrusion here, so maybe 5 to 9 inches from erie to cleveland, but 9

volumes this morning as the nation and the city of newtown remembered what happened one week ago today. rain drops, only rain drops were heard during this moment of silence. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to the 20 children, the 6, the 7-year-olds and the seven adults gunned down, for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 this morning eastern time. the time that first call came in to 911. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put their flags at half-staff. parts of the internet went silent. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary school. [ bells tolling ] at the episcopal church in newtown, 28 tolls rang for each life lost, including the shooter's. 28 there. when the bells were still, the remembrances began. one inside the capital building in hartford. ♪ amazing grace how sweet the sound ♪ ♪ that saved a wretch like me ♪ ♪ i once was lost but now i'm found ♪ ♪ was blind but now i see ♪ >> the first lady also marked this day in a letter to newtown.
